Focusing on overlooked elements in the city—such as dust, soot, construction debris, vacant land, abandoned sites, invisible labour, and aging infrastructure—this volume brings together essays by artists, designers, researchers, and local practitioners. It reflects on how “unwanted” things come into being, how they are rendered invisible, and what cities and communities choose to keep or discard. After nearly a year of preparation—photography, design, folding, hand-cutting, screen printing—this hand-crafted publication is complete. Design Code: Inspired by Manazuru’s “aesthetic standards,” the Design Code reflects a set of spatial and emotional criteria based on what we find beautiful and essential in a space.
